Pulse. Your Professional Contract Umbrella Company
home > FAQ > Contract Umbrella Company
At Pulse, we’re committed to delivering the most rewarding professional employment
service for independent workers on the market. We are a solution for contract workers,
which offers full employment status and the maximum possible take home pay whilst
keeping compliant with tax and national insurance legislation.
The founders of Pulse are all contractors themselves and decided to form the company
having been tired of the poor, uninspiring umbrella services currently available.
We appreciate that contractors’ knowledge of umbrella companies varies from
curious to expert. So here’s a quick introduction for those new to the industry.
An umbrella company, such as Pulse, offers a simple 'pay as you go' payroll alternative
to freelance contractors in the UK, wishing to work through their own limited company
as opposed to PAYE at the recruitment agency or end client. Contractor umbrella
companies can employ hundreds if not thousands of contractors, paying them on a
weekly or monthly basis following the submission of a timesheet. The main tax advantage
for contractors is that they are usually able to offset the cost of their travel
and subsistence expenses against their taxable pay. This equates to a higher net
take home salary.
We take care of your invoicing and tax, and make sure you are paid fast, efficiently
and legally. You select your assignments and we handle the paperwork, it’s
as simple as that.
The faster we work the quicker you get paid so we generate invoices the day we receive
timesheets and submit them to agencies straight away – we’re not one
of those companies that like to hold onto your money. We process payments as they
are received and get them into your account that day.
Receiving payments in dividends can appear to be beneficial to the contractor, reducing
the amount of tax the contractor pays. However, not all contractors are entitled
to pay themselves in dividends and this could lead to a large future tax bill and
a challenge by HMRC against IR35 tax legislation for unpaid tax and National Insurance.
Using an umbrella company removes many of the risks associated with running a limited
company.
The term contractor umbrella company is often used misleadingly as a general term
to cover all types of services to contractors, but a genuine umbrella company such
as Pulse Umbrella will not pay a contractor using dividends.
Pulse Umbrella is a fixed fee, pay-as-you-use service with no set-up fees, exit
fees or hidden charges. All contractors are fully insured with Professional Indemnity
Insurance and Employer's and Public Liability Insurance. We run a payroll everyday;
this means that contractors are not left waiting for the next payroll date to receive
their money.
